DIY Stacked Stone Wall Project

diy stacked stone wall project

Cutting our grass here has always been a challenge. Our front yard is especially bad just because of the natural contours. In addition, the contractors that built our house buried the building materials in the front yard which created two fairly large sinkholes over the years.

They are hard to see in the pictures I am sending but the sinkholes are located on each side of the planter that has the two large pines growing out of it. The holes were large enough to need about three truckloads of dirt. I knew that something needed be done about this eventually but I nearly had an accident a few weeks ago that expedited this process.

I stepped backwards into one of these holes while I was cutting grass and, in an attempt to catch myself, held on tightly to the lawnmower and I nearly pulled it on top of myself. This would have been really bad for a number of reasons but especially because I didn’t opt for long-term disability at work last year. Whew!

Anyway, I thought about a way that I could fix this problem and this is what Stacy and I were able to build. It took us about 3 1/2 weeks and we did nearly all of the work ourselves. The man that brought the dirt and rocks was nice enough to come back with a Bobcat and fill in the largest of the two sinkholes which saved us a lot of work. His name is Mario DaSilva and he owns Cherokee Stone Center in Holly Springs (770-213-4790). If you are looking at doing any of this kind of work, you should definitely give him a call.

I made a photo gallery and you can see it by clicking on the following link: http://www.makingtreks.com/Wall Photos/Wall Photos.html The first two pictures are the before pictures and the last three are the after.

Of course, we aren’t quite done. We are going to plant some things behind the new wall but the hard work is finished. Let us know what you think.
